Trench and Competent Person

Trenches and excavations are the sites of hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries each year because of the special dangers they pose including asphyxiation, entrapment, and exposure to toxic chemicals. In view of these facts, OSHA developed CFR 1926 Subpart P.

START Group offers the following comprehensive training and loss control packages in trenching and Competent Person:

  • Evaluation of Current Level of Compliance - Completion of a site review of your organization’s equipment and policies regarding current means of safely trenching and excavating according to OSHA 1926 Subpart P, along with focusing on the roles and responsibilities of the Competent Person. In order to assist with policy and procedure development, formal written recommendations will be made regarding areas that need improvement.
  • Regulatory Classroom Session - Completion of a turn-key, classroom session informing all participants of the critical aspects of OSHA 1926 Subpart P, along with the interface of this standard with your agency’s trenching and excavating operations.
  • Manipulative Skills Training Session - Completion of trenching and excavation techniques involving demonstrations and utilizing live trenches and/or excavations, along with your agency’s and START Group's trenching policies and Competent Person’s checklist. Training will focus on the use of protective system equipment (i.e., shoring, shields), along with sloping and benching practices. Training will involve use of your organization's equipment, along with additional equipment provided by the START Group.
  • Quick Reference Guides- General information quick reference guides on trench and excavation compliance are available through MDI and have been authored by the START Group Director, Michael J. Kelly.
